The Shen lab at the Department of Neuroscience at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine is looking for a bioinformatics research programmer. We (including some other labs) are an interdisciplinary group of scientists who are working on some of the most interesting topics such as epigenomic changes in drug addiction, stress and depression. We are composed of molecular biologists, computer scientists, biostatisticians and psychiatrists who are trying to solve some of the most challenging problems in neuroscience.
We have assembled a large number of next-generation sequencing runs including ChIP-seq and RNA-seq. As things move forward, we are planning to produce more nextgen sequencing data including DNA methyl-seq. We have also accumulated a lot of genome-wide high-throughput data such as gene expression microarrays and ChIP-chips during our research in the last few years. And we want you to help us find innovative ways to analyze, integrate, visualize and organize these mountains of information!
We have specific research goals but we do not want to limit your imagination! We want you to propose your own project that is related with any of the above aspects of dealing with the nextgen sequencing data. A prototype must be finished within 1-2 year range and has to be interesting, cool or even crazy!
Specific Requirements:
• Familiarity with the next-generation sequencing data such as ChIP-seq and RNA-seq.
• Familiarity with molecular biology and genomics.
• Familiarity with commonly used bioinformatics tools such as UCSC genome browser, Galaxy, BLAST and Bioconductor.
• Good knowledge in Statistics, Bayesian theory and Machine Learning.
• Excellent programming skills with languages such as R, Perl, Java, C/C++ or Python.
• Work experience with Linux or Unix systems.
• Experience with distributed computing or cloud computing a plus.
• Very good communication skills.
• Master or Ph.D. degree in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Biostatistics or related field. Bachelor degree will also be considered if you have relevant project experience.
