    Genomic Services Lab – Computational Biologist

    HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology is seeking a computationally minded individual with a strong programming/computer science background who has an interest or experience in bioinformatics to work in the Genomic Services Laboratory located in Huntsville, AL. The GSL is a genomics core lab providing high-throughput sequencing and microarray service to customers around the world. Our team of 8 scientists and technicians process and analyze several thousand samples a year across a variety of platforms, including the Illumina HiSeq 2000 (4 in house) and Genome Analyzer IIx (5), Life Technologies SOLiD 3 and Ion Torrent PGM, Roche 454 FLX, and Affymetrix and Illumina microarray systems.

    Job Description (Duties and Responsibilities):

    -Extensive involvement with day-to-day data analysis of genomes, and contribute/lead in the creation of tools to visualize complex genomic data sets
    -Perform quality control of all experiments performed in the GSL, and work with lab personnel to troubleshoot problems as necessary
    -Develop and adapt new analysis protocols and tools to be suitable for a high-throughput environment
    -Design and maintain computational tools as necessary to support and improve laboratory efficiency

    Qualifications:

    -B.S. or M.S. in computer science, computational science, informatics, biological sciences, or related area is required
    -Able to perform job responsibilities independently, with general and minimal direction
    -Experience programming in Java, C++, Perl, or Python for UNIX is required
    -General knowledge of genomic and biological data is preferred
    -Experience with very large data sets, along with an aptitude for solving puzzles is preferred
