  • Scientific Programmer at Columbia Genome Center

The Columbia University Sulzberger Genome Center is seeking a scientific programmer for its Next-Generation Sequencing Laboratory. The Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) Lab is well funded and equipped with state-of-the-art high-throughput sequencing instruments. It has extensive collaborations with investigators at Columbia University for studying fundamental problems in biology and translational medicine.

The successful applicant would join the NGS lab bioinformatics team, which is located in the Center for Computational Biology and Bioinformatics (C2B2), a vibrant hub for interdisciplinary research. The candidate will benefit from intensive interactions and collaborations with a strong group of computational and experimental biologists who use high-throughput and systems approaches to study important biomedical problems, including cancer genomics, genetic studies of Mendelian diseases and common diseases, epigenomics. She or he would be expected to be involved in all aspects of computational analysis for a wide range of next-generation sequencing applications, including whole genome or exome resequencing, RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, de novo genome assembly, and short-RNA profiling.

The ideal candidate will have programming skills to create sequence analysis pipelines, extend existing tools, integrate additional tools in the analysis pipeline, and develop new algorithms as required by the project. The candidate will be expected to work with scientists to understand the biological problems and to provide advices on both experiment design and data analysis. The candidate may also work with programming staffs in designing and implementing larger scale solutions for specific projects.

Minimum Degree Required: B.S. or equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications: Deep experience in bioinformatics analysis of high-throughput sequencing data. Demonstrated ability in problem solving. Excellent communication skills. The rank and salary of the position will be competitive based on qualifications.

Programming: Fluency with at least one general-purpose programming language (such as C/C++, Ruby, Perl, or Python), and one language for scientific computing (such as R or Matlab). Experience with source code version control systems.

Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
    by seqadmin

The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist...

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...
