  • Post-Doctoral Research Fellow–bioinformatics in psychiatric disorder (New York)

Neurodevelopmental disorders are a common group of developmental disabilities affecting individuals of all ages. Understanding the causes and biological mechanisms underlying these disorders is crucial to improve the ability to diagnose and treat individuals.

The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai is looking for a post-doctoral researcher to assess the role of noncoding RNAs in gene regulatory networks underlying neurodevelopmental disorders. The position involves integrating noncoding and coding RNA expression data with prior genetic knowledge, as well as quantifying noncoding RNA isoforms, co-expression and network-based analyses and modeling. The candidate will use the latest next-generation sequencing technologies to analyze transcriptomes and identify long full-length noncoding RNA isoform variants.

We are seeking a motivated postdoctoral candidate with strong computational and analytical skills and an interest in applying computational and systems biology approaches. The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in genomics, bioinformatics with a strong background in RNA biology and excellent quantitative skills. The selected applicant will work within a multidisciplinary team and be part of a recently funded NIMH PsychENCODE project. This position requires extensive experience with UNIX, Python, C/C++ and statistical environments such as R, and familiarity with large-scale GWAS and RNA-Seq data.

    Specific qualifications include:

    Experience in the following areas:
    • Mapping RNAs using short and long-read RNA sequencing data
    • Annotation and reconstruction of transcript isoforms
    • Co-expression and network-based/modeling
    • Familiarity with large-scale GWAS
    Programming (python, C/C++, or Java)
Statistical analysis (using R or Matlab)
Ability to complete tasks efficiently and independently
Strong work ethic and attention to detail
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Ability to work in a collaborative setting
The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer. We recognize the power and importance of a diverse employee population and strongly encourage applicants with various experiences and backgrounds.

To apply, please e-mail a CV, a brief description of research experience and interests, and contact information for 1-3 references to:

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...

    Strategies for Sequencing Challenging Samples
    by seqadmin

Despite advancements in sequencing platforms and related sample preparation technologies, certain sample types continue to present significant challenges that can compromise sequencing results. Pedro Echave, Senior Manager of the Global Business Segment at Revvity, explained that the success of a sequencing experiment ultimately depends on the amount and integrity of the nucleic acid template (RNA or DNA) obtained from a sample. “The better the quality of the nucleic acid isolated...
