  • Biological Software Engineer - Edinburgh Genome Foundry, University of Edinburgh, UK

The Edinburgh Genome Foundry (EGF) is a newly established facility in the expanding field of Synthetic Biology at The University of Edinburgh. It will design and assemble up to chromosome-length DNA constructs for a variety of applications. The Biological Software Engineer will be responsible for the design, deployment and maintenance of the Foundry’s software resources in conjunction with the other members of the software team. You will play a key role in planning, developing, testing and deploying software solutions to enable the establishment of a highly automated high-throughput DNA synthesis facility.

Ideally you will have a degree in a relevant subject and at least 4 years’ experience of leading software engineering projects or have a minimum of 10 years’ work experience in relevant technical or scientific roles. An interest in synthetic biology and bioengineering would be an advantage for this role.

We are also open to applications from candidates who might have less experience but are still enthusiastic about this opportunity.

    Salary range depending on post offered: Grade 8: £38,511 - £45,954 or Grade 7: £31,342 - £37,394

Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
    by seqadmin

The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist on Modified Bases...

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...
