  • Postdoctoral Position - Brain Tumor Bioinformatics, UCSF

The Aghi lab is looking for postdoctoral fellows to assist us in conducting studies that will be part of two recently funded R01 grants that will involve (1) small molecule inhibitor screens looking for agents that disrupt invasive resistance to angiogenesis inhibitors; and (2) a CRISPR library screen looking for inhibitors of invasion in 3D bioengineered models. The central focus of the lab is to define mechanisms of glioblastoma invasion and angiogenesis, mechanisms of glioblastoma cell survival, and mechanisms of glioblastoma resistance to treatments. Details about work in our lab can be found at https://manishaghi.wixsite.com/website .

Requirements are: (1) recently earned MD and/or PhD degree(s) in areas of the biological sciences relevant to this research (such as biochemistry, bioinformatics, molecular biology, immunology); (2) a strong background in bioinformatics, cell biology, and molecular biology; (3) multiple first author publications written by the applicant and published or accepted for publication in reputable peer reviewed Pub Med cited journals; (4) the ability to write competitive scientific grants that will procure funding for the applicant during the postdoctoral fellowship and allow the candidate to transition to independent positions as academic faculty or within industry; (5) the ability to work long and flexible hours in order to accomplish these goals; (6) fluency in English and the interpersonal skills required to teach junior members of the laboratory; and (7) applicants should be US citizens, permanent residents, or most currently hold a valid US work visa. Experience in cancer bioinformatics, CRISPR library screens, or small molecule screens is strongly desired given the funded projects we have.

NIH standards will be used in setting the pay scale.

Only qualified candidates will be contacted to schedule interviews, which must be in person in San Francisco before the position can be offered. The start date is negotiable. The appointment is subject to an annual renewal to ensure that there is mutual satisfaction.

To apply, please email cover letter, CV with list of publications and prior research experience, and names of 2 references to [email protected].

Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
    by seqadmin

The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist on Modified Bases...

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...
