The Center for Research on Influenza Pathogenesis (CRIP) at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS) is looking for a full-time Bioinformatics Programmer/Analyst with a strong background in data management and de novo genome assembly from short- and long-read next-generation sequencing (NGS) data. The candidate will be responsible for genome assembly, genotypic characterization, phylogenetic analysis and risk assessment of new influenza strains collected for surveillance and research purposes. The candidate will also work closely with the PI on studies that will assess virus-host interactions using a variety of high-throughput technologies, including RNA-Seq, ChIP-Seq and GRO-Seq.
We seek a highly motivated and dedicated person with an M.Sc. or Ph.D. degree in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology or a related field, with excellent quantitative skills and the ability to work well in a collaborative environment. The candidate will preferably have at least two years of work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The applicant should have a strong computational background, combined with a solid understanding of biology. Specific qualifications include:
• Genome assembly (e.g. Amos, Cabog, Trinity).
• Relational database design and web development (e.g. MySQL/MariaDB, PostgreSQL).
• Scripting (e.g. python, awk, sed) and/or programming languages (e.g. C/C++, Java).
• Statistical packages (e.g. R, Matlab).
• Linux/Unix operating systems and high-performance computing clusters.
• Ability to complete tasks efficiently and independently.
• Strong work ethic and attention to detail.
• Excellent communication and writing skills.
• Ability to work well with others.
