Default Genomic data storage - What kind of device ?

Hello women and gentlemen,

I need your advice. I have to store genomic data (30X genomes), and I would like to know what kind of device should be use.
I often read that SSD is better in terms of speed, but for storage and only storage, is it really useful to buy this kind of drive ? What are the advantage of this device ? Is it secure ?

Thank you by advance for your lights !

There's no reason to store bulk data on a SSD. Your raw data might be around 3 TB, assuming 30x coverage. A couple of hard drives would be sufficient... and, of course, a couple more for backups.

How you store it really depends more on how you plan to use the data, how valuable/replaceable it is, and legal issues than technical ones like media type. So, what is it, and what are you doing with it?

Thanks for your reply,

Our data are genomic data that we have to store for at least one year for a research project. It already exists several copies so I think that the - long-term - security is not the priority. A priori, no computation will be done using the device.

The only question I am asking to my superiors is what they plan to do with the device after the research project will be finished...
