  • Junior Bioinformatician - UC San Diego

The Moores Cancer Center Oncogenomics Laboratory (moores.ucsd.edu/oncogx/) is recruiting a junior bioinformatician / genome analyst.

The main focus of the oncogenomics laboratory is to analyze patient-derived specimen, both tumor and germline, to identify novel biomarkers of prognosis, drug response and to identify novel potential therapeutic targets. Our approach uses in-house generated as well as public datasets of high-throughput DNA sequencing for data analysis and data mining.

We are seeking applicants who are creative and independent data analysts but able to effectively work within a team of individuals with diverse skills. In particular, we are looking for candidates with MS+0-3 years or PhD in computer science / bioinformatics/ bio-engineeering with strong analytical background (mathematics or statistics). Ideal candidates will be familiar with human genomic databases (UCSC Browser, ENCODE, TCGA) and high throughput DNA sequencing analysis (BWA, GATK, SAMTOOLS, VCFTOOLS). Knowledge of R, UNIX bash scripting and one programming language (Perl, Python, C++, Java) is required. Documented history of adherence to good coding practice (version control and open source software development) is desirable.

To apply, please send a CV with a cover letter describing professional interests to Olivier Harismendy ([email protected])

Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
      by seqadmin

The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist...

      Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
      by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...
