  • Statistical geneticist, human whole genome sequence analysis

Knome, Inc.(www.knome.com) is a trail-blazing human genome sequence interpretation company based in Cambridge, MA. Founded by George Church, Knome analyzes human whole genomes and exomes for researchers probing the genetic basis of health.

We seek a self-starter with doctoral training in statistical genetics, to join a team building new tools to efficiently glean insight from human genomes. Applicant must have deep expertise in genetics and associated statistical methods; experience with analytic and heuristic methods for finding complex genotype-phenotype associations; and fluency in R, Octave, C++, Perl, Python, and/or other relevant coding environments. Understanding of human genetic and phenotypic variation, and/or clinical, population, or evolutionary genetics is ideal. And direct experience with high-throughput genome sequence data is preferred. Above all, applicant must be passionately interested in the fast-emerging utility of whole genome comparative analysis in basic and clinical research.

    Responsibilities may include:
•Devising new algorithms (and adapting existing methods) for comparing whole human genome sequences, to efficiently find candidate health-relevant variants, genes, and pathways
•Working with software developers to integrate new methods into Knome’s automated genome analysis engine
•Analyzing live data sets, in order to catalyze discoveries
•Publishing relevant research findings and innovative methods
•Tracking developments in statistical genetics through peer-reviewed literature, blogs, webcasts, conference proceedings, and communication with other field leaders

    Desired skills:
•Cross-disciplinary academic or professional training in statistical genetics, computer science, and/or human genetics
    •Top-notch problem-solving skills
•Comfort in relevant statistical and bioinformatics scripting and programming environments
•Familiarity with relevant toolkits and databases (e.g., BioConductor, 1000genomes, KEGG, ENSEMBL)
•Ability to work both independently and as part of an entrepreneurial team

    Benefits:
Knome’s Reward Package is made up of three parts, as follows:
    • Base Compensation
    • Stock Option Grants for all full-time employees
    • Benefits

Knome offers its eligible employees a comprehensive and competitive benefits package. Knome contributes to the benefits package.
    • Medical Coverage
    • Dental Coverage
    • Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA)
    • Long-term Disability Insurance
    • Life and AD&D Insurance
    • Employee Assistance Program
    • 401(k) Retirement Plan
    • 15 vacation days and 9 holidays per year
    • Direct Deposit

This benefits-at-a-glance has been designed to give you an overview of the Knome Reward Package. It does not, however, attempt to explain all the details, provisions, restrictions and exclusions of the package. The Company reserves the right to change or terminate any part of this package at any time.

Compensation will be commensurate with experience, with opportunities for an equity stake in an early-stage company. This is a full-time job, located in Cambridge, MA.

    Strategies for Sequencing Challenging Samples
    by seqadmin

Despite advancements in sequencing platforms and related sample preparation technologies, certain sample types continue to present significant challenges that can compromise sequencing results. Pedro Echave, Senior Manager of the Global Business Segment at Revvity, explained that the success of a sequencing experiment ultimately depends on the amount and integrity of the nucleic acid template (RNA or DNA) obtained from a sample. “The better the quality of the nucleic acid isolated...
