    is recruiting a Bioinformatician (m/f) (#CFBI06)

The Institute of Molecular Biology gGmbH (IMB) is a Centre of Excellence for Life Sciences funded by the Boehringer Ingelheim Foundation, and located within the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany. The IMB focuses on epigenetics, DNA repair and developmental biology and offers state of the art core facilities covering genomics, cytometry, proteomics and microscopy, with bioinformatics / statistics connecting facilities and departments (http://www.imb-mainz.de/core-facilities/). We are looking for a Bioinformatician (m/f) to join the Core Facility.

    You will:
    • Analyse data generated by high throughput technologies, especially from next-generation sequencing
    • Consult scientists on the analysis of data, experimental planning, data validation and functional analysis
    • Collaborate with our scientists on several projects in parallel
    • Assess existing and develop new data analysis methods for high-throughput data
    • Develop and maintain data analysis pipelines and infrastructure
    • Train users in bioinformatics and statistics

    Required qualifications:
    • Formal training in a quantitative discipline (e.g. PhD, Diploma or equivalent in mathematics, physics, statistics, bioinformatics)
    • At least 3 years’ experience in the analysis of high-throughput genomics data
    • Sound knowledge of statistics and R/Bioconductor
    • In-depth programming skills, at least one language (Perl, Python, Java, C++,...) and familiarity with Linux/Unix
    • Experience in the design of robust analysis pipelines
    • Interest to acquire in-depth knowledge about biological processes
    • Proficiency in written and spoken English
    • Commitment and dedication to your work

    Desirable qualifications:
    • Successful interdisciplinary collaborations
    • Experience with computing clusters and bioinformatics workflow environments
    • Software engineering

    We offer:
    • Research in a competitive and dynamic international environment
    • Advanced training opportunities
    • Competitive salary
    • Favourable pension scheme

IMB is an equal opportunity employer. Application deadline is September 15th 2013, and the successful applicant should start as soon as possible, with an initial contract for 2 years, incl. an option for extension. Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
    by seqadmin

The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist on Modified Bases...

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...
