  • NGS Data Analyst at Iowa State University

The Genome Informatics Facility at Iowa State University is seeking a motivated bioinformatics analyst, Assistant Scientist II or III, who is interested in solving challenging and interesting biological questions using bioinformatics tools and knowledge about the organism under study. This individual will improve the efficiency of scientific discovery out of the large volumes of data brought on by the revolution in sequencing technology.

The position will be responsible for facilitating data analysis of Next Generation Sequencing data for faculty on campus. This includes but is not limited to training of students/postdocs, downloading data, processing of data using open source tools, generation of text for methods and generation of figures for publication.

The successful candidate will need to be able to assimilate information quickly, possess a basic knowledge in all branches of life (plant, animal and microorganism/virus), and have the ability to communicate effectively. Due to the dynamic nature of the emerging field of genomics, this individual will have a documented positive work ethic, a passion for learning and an enthusiasm for challenges.

Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
      by seqadmin

The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist...

      Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
      by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...
