  • Two postdoc positions in genomics and bioinformatics at BIOLS, Beijing

    Job Description:
We are looking for two enthusiastic Bioinformaticians (Computational Genomics) to join the Genomics Team at the Beijing Institutes of Life Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences located in Beijing, China.

The advent of high-throughput sequencing technology has dramatically changed the nature of biological and biomedical research. The remarkable improvement in throughput and pricing is enabling low-cost access to whole genomes previously un-sequenced, but more importantly is broadening the application of DNA sequencing far beyond traditional uses. However, such high volumes of short-read data brings many computational challenges, including filtering and correcting low-quality reads, mapping a vast amount of short reads to reference genomes, and building a de novo assembly from short reads, etc.

The responsibilities of the Bioinformaticians include the integration and analysis of genomics data using high-throughput methods and development of new algorithms and computational tools.

    Requirements:
Ph.D. in bioinformatics or a related area; experience or the equivalent skills to handle problems in genomics, NGS data analysis or data mining, etc.

Ability to consult with faculty and graduate students as well as possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Positions are available immediately and will remain open until filled.

    Contact Information:
Please submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and two reference letters to Prof. Fangqing Zhao ([email protected]).

    About Our Organization:
Beijing Institutes of Life Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences (BIOLS, CAS) was established by reorganization of Institute of Biophysics, Institute of Zoology, Institute of Microbiology, Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology, Institute of Genomics, Institute of Psychology, and Institute of Botany. As an interdisciplinary life science research center, BIOLS provides supports for research facilities, international collaboration, academic forum, graduate education et al. The aims of BIOLS are to promote national and international academic communication and to offer an efficient network for scientists from different areas.

To meet the requirements of national strategies about life science, BIOLS coordinates the seven institutes on biological and biomedical fields in Beijing, focusing on optimizing administration, improving infrastructure and supporting key research projects. BIOLS is committed to establish the public platform to facilitate academic communication and cross-disciplinary integration. In addition, through encouraging innovative research and collaboration between academic and industrial fields, BIOLS promotes the translation of original research into biotechnology.

Facing toward the opportunities and challenges of Knowledge Innovation Program phase III in Chinese Academy of Sciences, BIOLS will continue its leading role of life science and make contribution for biological and biomedical research and biotechnology in China.

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...

    Strategies for Sequencing Challenging Samples
    by seqadmin

Despite advancements in sequencing platforms and related sample preparation technologies, certain sample types continue to present significant challenges that can compromise sequencing results. Pedro Echave, Senior Manager of the Global Business Segment at Revvity, explained that the success of a sequencing experiment ultimately depends on the amount and integrity of the nucleic acid template (RNA or DNA) obtained from a sample. “The better the quality of the nucleic acid isolated...
