  • Postdoctoral fellowship in computational biology and epigenome bioinformatics

The Hawkins Lab at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle, WA USA has a Postdoctoral Fellow position available for a computational biologist to specialize in epigenomic informatics. The research will focus on investigating the role of epigenomics in gene regulation, 3D genome architecture and cell fate commitment, with a focus on stem cells and disease. This will require developing and utilizing computational approaches for the analysis of diverse epigenomic datasets from human and mouse systems. The lab was awarded two NIH R01s in the last year. This position is funded for 4-5 years.

We utilize high-throughput genomic approaches to understand histone modifications, DNA methylation, transcriptomes, TF binding sites, & 3D architecture in projects in diverse areas that include hESC and neuro-differentiation, cancer stem cells, blood/immune progenitor cells and related diseases, and the role of regulatory SNPs in diseases (if this isn’t enough we’ll come up with something else). The successful applicant will have the opportunity to lead the integrative analysis of these genome-wide data.

Candidates should have experience in NGS processing and integrative analysis of experimental datasets. Demonstrable skills in programming, biostatistics, and database languages (e.g. Python/Perl, shell scripting, R/MATLAB, SQLite/MYSQL/NoSQL) are essential. Good written and verbal communication skills are required. Must be highly motivated, can’t take yourself too seriously, and play well with biologists.

The Hawkins Lab is part of the Division of Medical Genetics, Department of Medicine and Department of Genome Sciences, and members of the Institute for Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine. The University of Washington is a world-class research institute with state-of-the-art facilities and services. The Seattle area is home to a thriving research community, which includes Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, the Institute for Systems Biology, the Allen Institute for Brain Science, Sage Bionetworks, and others. The city of Seattle is a vibrant place to live surrounded by Lake Washington and the Puget Sound, with the Cascade and Olympic mountain ranges nearby. Seattle is home to foodies, geeks, hipsters, nerds, techies, artists, coffee snobs, and nature-loving, Pacific Crest Trail-hiking, ski/snowboarding enthusiasts. Come make the most of your postdoc.

This position is open until filled.

    Strategies for Sequencing Challenging Samples
    by seqadmin

Despite advancements in sequencing platforms and related sample preparation technologies, certain sample types continue to present significant challenges that can compromise sequencing results. Pedro Echave, Senior Manager of the Global Business Segment at Revvity, explained that the success of a sequencing experiment ultimately depends on the amount and integrity of the nucleic acid template (RNA or DNA) obtained from a sample. “The better the quality of the nucleic acid isolated...
