  • Three openings for scientists comfortable with NGS

There are three positions available which require working with next-gen sequence (among other skills).

"The Department of Wound Infections at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research seeks a bacteriophage ecologist to investigate the natural populations of bacteriophage associated with infections. The position will require research utilizing animal protocols and potentially human use protocols. This staff scientist position is currently funded from a two year grant. This is a contract position which will be managed through Clinical Research Management (http://www.clinicalrm.com/). The ideal candidate will have experience with culture-independent virus collection from environmental samples, microscopy and metagenomic sequencing, as well as traditional bacteriophage enrichment and culture. A green card (perm. res.) or citizenship is required; salary commensurate with qualifications. Full benefits, location is outside Washington DC north of Silver Spring (WRAIR).
Contact [email protected] for further details."

"The Department of Wound Infections at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research is looking for a skin microbiome researcher with experience using high throughput sequencing to characterized mixed populations of bacteria. The ability to execute a project in microbial ecology from sampling to sequence analysis is required and should be supported by experience. The ideal candidate will have experience with multiple sequencing platforms, sampling from skin surfaces, and the ability to perform limited programming in support of data analysis. Experience with fungi, the viral microbiome and skin physiology a plus. The candidate must be able to interact well with peers, including extramural partners and fellow research staff. This position is currently funded from a two year grant, but there are
opportunities to submit grant applications. A green card (perm. res.) or citizenship is required; salary commensurate with qualifications. Full benefits, location is outside Washington DC north of Silver Spring (WRAIR).
Contact [email protected] for further details."

"The Department of Wound Infections at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research is looking for an energetic data scientist with experience with whole genomes and possibly epidemiology to engage in the analysis of clinically relevant and emerging multi-drug resistant bacteria from across America, Europe, the Middle East and South East Asia. Software development skills required. The ideal candidate will have the experience to interface with the IT department in establishing local resources and the Army Research Labs in accessing high performance computing, will be able to interface with extramural partners around the world as a peer, and will have enough biology laboratory experience to interface with both the local laboratory staff in discussions of specimen handling and contract laboratory staff regarding sequencing, verification and assembly. This position is currently funded from a two year grant, but there are close ties to an enduring capability, opportunities for promotion, and opportunities to submit grant applications to the DoD intramural research programs. Full benefits, location is outside Washington DC north of Silver Spring (WRAIR). Contact [email protected] for further details. "

Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
      by seqadmin

The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist on Modified Bases...

      Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
      by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...
