  • Bioinformatics data analyst - comparative, evolutionary analysis; NGS analysis

    Working Title:
    DATA ANALYST
    Official Title:
    RESEARCHER(E05DN) or ASSOC RESEARCHER(E05FN) or ASST RESEARCHER(E05LN)
    Degree and area of specialization:
Masters in Bioinformatics/Computational Biology or a related field, including biological sciences, statistics, or computer science required, Ph.D. preferred.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
Minimum of three years of bioinformatics experience. Working knowledge of informatics computing, scripting languages, basic R statistical analysis skills, and Linux pipeline experience. Familiarity with Condor would be beneficial. Teamwork and collaboration skills. Previous experience conducting comparative and evolutionary analyses preferred, but is not essential.

    Principal duties:

The University of Wisconsin Biotechnology Center (UWBC) is a synergistic blend of core service facilities, research and outreach activities. The Bioinformatics Resource Center (BRC), one of UWBC core facilities, is seeking to add a highly self-motivated individual to our team, with special focus on comparative and evolutionary genomics. This individual will be primarily responsible for conducting analyses of assembled and annotated genomic and metagenomics data. Initially, this individual will work closely with a collaborative group that has developed workflows involving prediction of orthology relationships across hundreds of bacterial genomes, genome-scale phylogenetic analyses, detection of horizontal transfer events, and ancestral state reconstructions.

70% Work with Genome evolution laboratory to analyze genomic and metagenomics data produced in the laboratory. Responsible for working with project personnel to implement and run pipelines to conduct these analyses on a regular basis. This involves scripting, exploration of parameter selections, summarizing large data in tabular and graphical formats, and providing detailed documentation of all methods used. These analyses use a wide variety of Linux software applications including, but not limited to OrthoMCL, MAFFT, RAxML, Mr. Bayes, BuCky and various specialized R packages. Many aspects of these analyses are computationally intensive requiring high-throughput infrastructure available at the BRC and using the campus Condor resource.

15% Maintain and improve data analysis pipeline. This position will also be integrated into the BRC analysis team. This involves daily interactions, weekly meetings, and regular cross-training in a wide variety of next generation sequence data analyses.

10% Assist the Facility Director with investigating and developing new processes and techniques to improve campus bioinformatics support on comparative genomics.

    5% Other Duties as assigned.

Recent Advances in Sequencing Analysis Tools
    by seqadmin

The sequencing world is rapidly changing due to declining costs, enhanced accuracies, and the advent of newer, cutting-edge instruments. Equally important to these developments are improvements in sequencing analysis, a process that converts vast amounts of raw data into a comprehensible and meaningful form. This complex task requires expertise and the right analysis tools. In this article, we highlight the progress and innovation in sequencing analysis by reviewing several of the...

Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
    by seqadmin

The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist...
