  • IonTorren PGM/Proton + Cloud vs. Illumina + Bioinformatics Core

    Hi Everyone,

I posted a few weeks back introducing myself to the general forum (research scientist with the NSF I-Corps program). Since then, I've spent my time speaking to lab directors in clinical facilities (especially smaller labs). We've found that a lot of groups are opting for the IonTorrent PGM or Proton + Ingenuity pipeline for their next-gen work. Specifically, they've cited the fact that the cost is lower than Illumina and they don't need any bioinformaticians or computer cluster resources for post-run processing as influential factors. Thought I'd see if anyone here might weigh in. Both are very different approaches, and we're trying to understand if IonTorrent and cloud processing is really picking up steam with new/emerging clinical diagnostic labs. Any opinions/thoughts are welcomed. Thanks and have a good weekend!

But they do sell you the compute server separately when you purchase the PGM yes?
I have not heard about the Ingenuity pipeline but am interested to know more. for clinical diagnostics
the fact that Ion PGM Dx is listed as a Class II medical device should make things interesting

      Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
      by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...

      Strategies for Sequencing Challenging Samples
      by seqadmin

Despite advancements in sequencing platforms and related sample preparation technologies, certain sample types continue to present significant challenges that can compromise sequencing results. Pedro Echave, Senior Manager of the Global Business Segment at Revvity, explained that the success of a sequencing experiment ultimately depends on the amount and integrity of the nucleic acid template (RNA or DNA) obtained from a sample. “The better the quality of the nucleic acid isolated...
