    UNIVERSITY OF ULSTER

    PhD Studentship in Biomedical Sciences

Applications are invited for a funded PhD studentship tenable in the Faculty of Life and Health Sciences at the Coleraine and Londonderry Campuses.

All applicants should hold a first or upper second class honours degree in BSc in any quantitative science, e.g. mathematics, physics, chemistry, computer science, engineering.

Successful candidates will enrol as of September 2014, on a full-time programme of research studies leading to the award of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy.

The studentship will comprise fees together with an annual stipend of £13,863 and will be awarded for a period of up to three years subject to satisfactory progress.

The closing date for receipt of completed applications is 28th February 2014.

Interviews will be held during March 2014.

This project investigates how cholesterol metabolism and the processes leading to cardiovascular disease vary from person to person. Using data taken from large patient groups across the world we will explore this variation geographically, examining global trends and the variation within continents, and we will examine the impact of different disease types.

This will produce the first analysis of how cholesterol metabolism and the associated cardiovascular disease processes vary across large patient groups and the first geographical break-down. The project will require mathematical and computational skills. An understanding of systems biology and/or bioinformatics would be advantageous.

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...

    Strategies for Sequencing Challenging Samples
    by seqadmin

Despite advancements in sequencing platforms and related sample preparation technologies, certain sample types continue to present significant challenges that can compromise sequencing results. Pedro Echave, Senior Manager of the Global Business Segment at Revvity, explained that the success of a sequencing experiment ultimately depends on the amount and integrity of the nucleic acid template (RNA or DNA) obtained from a sample. “The better the quality of the nucleic acid isolated...
