  • Bioinformatics Position for NGS facility

    Job Description:
The Next Generation Sequencing Unit of Biocant, Portugal (www.biocant.pt), is seeking a Bioinformatician with expertise in the analysis of next generation sequencing data for immediate start.

The Next Generation Sequencing Unit of Biocant is the first NGS facility in Portugal dedicated to sequencing and data analysis. We are currently equipped with a 454 and an Ion Proton sequencing platforms as well as a powerful scientific computing cluster. The facility operates since 2007 at Biocant, the technological park dedicated to R&D and technology transfer in Life Sciences located at the center region of the country (www.biocant.pt). The NGS Unit collaborates with companies and research groups from the medical to agriculture fields, in challenging projects where massive amounts of data needs to be processed.

    Requirements:
We are looking for an enthusiastic, self-motivated bioinformatician with a PhD or MSc degree in bioinformatics, computer science, or related disciplines, preferably with experience in next generation sequencing analysis. Knowledge of programming languages (PERL, Python, Java/ C++), statistical packages (R) and SQL database design (MySQL, PostgreSQL) is required in addition to experience of working in UNIX/LINUX.

Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
    by seqadmin

The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist...

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...
