2021 SIB Bioinformatics Awards - Calls now open!

To promote excellence, diversity and innovation in the field of bioinformatics, the SIB Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics created a set of Bioinformatics Awards twelve years ago to acknowledge early career bioinformaticians and ground-breaking resources.

SIB Awards honour bioinformatics excellence in three categories:
    • Early Career Bioinformatics Award – an international award to recognise the excellence and promising nature of a researcher’s early career, based on one or several projects and/or papers focussing on the in silico analysis of biological sequences, structures or processes. More information
      Call for entries: 2 November 2020 – 31 January 2021
    • Swiss Bioinformatics Graduate Paper Award – a national award that recognises an outstanding graduate paper published by a PhD student in the area of in silico analysis of biological sequences, structures or processes. More information
      Call for entries: 2 November 2020 – 31 January 2021
    • Bioinformatics Resource Innovation Award – an international award that recognises newly developed bioinformatics resources with an important impact on life science research or the clear potential to make such an impact. More information
      Call for entries: 9 November 2020 – 28 February 2021

Candidates from the global bioinformatics community are encouraged to apply for these prestigious awards. Besides a cash prize, all laureates will be invited to present their work at the [BC]2 Basel Computational Biology Conference in Autumn 2021 in Basel, Switzerland.

Follow the latest news and announcements related to the SIB Awards on SIB’s website and under @ISBSIB on Twitter (#SIBawards).

Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
    by seqadmin

The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist on Modified Bases...

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...
