  • Bioinformatician Position at the Leibniz Institute for Age Research - Jena

    Postdoctoral position in Bioinformatics

The Genome Analysis group at the Leibniz Institute for Age Research - Fritz Lipmann Institute (genome.fli-leibniz.de) in Jena, Germany, is inviting applications for a postdoctoral position in bioinformatics.

The annual fish Nothobranchius furzeri is the vertebrate with the shortest known lifespan in captivity. The FLI is currently developing genetic and genomic resources to use this model system as a tool to investigate the molecular mechanisms controlling ageing (www.fli-leibniz.de/research/nofu). Last year, first insights into the genome organisation have been obtained (Genome Biol 10:R16). Next-generation sequencing technologies (454/Solexa) are employed towards a working-draft sequence of the N. furzeri genome.

For assembly and annotation of the N. furzeri genome, we are seeking strongly motivated and highly qualified candidates having profound analytical, programming, and theoretical skills. Experience in genomics, molecular genetics, and Perl/C++/Java programming under Unix/Linux would be advantageous.

We offer an international, interdisciplinary, and technically state of the art environment where you can continually add to your skills through involvement in different lines of research. The project is being done in close collaboration with the groups of Alexander Cellerino and Christoph Englert.

Salary is according to E13, TV-L. The position is open from January 2010 for an initial period of two years, with the possibility of extension.

Please send your application including C.V., a short description of research experience and interests, and contact details of two referees and/or letters of recommendation via email to [email protected], tel +49 (0)3641 656240.

Recent Advances in Sequencing Analysis Tools
    by seqadmin

The sequencing world is rapidly changing due to declining costs, enhanced accuracies, and the advent of newer, cutting-edge instruments. Equally important to these developments are improvements in sequencing analysis, a process that converts vast amounts of raw data into a comprehensible and meaningful form. This complex task requires expertise and the right analysis tools. In this article, we highlight the progress and innovation in sequencing analysis by reviewing several of the...

Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
    by seqadmin

The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist...
