    BLAST Alignment Length

    Hi you all! As I am new in Bioinformatics, I come across a question when I used BLAST.
    I perform local BLAST and the format of output is set to tabular. It is so interesting to find that sometimes the alignment length of some query is different from the number of nucleotides in the subject (the subject start and subject end). Why is it? Or is there anything I misunderstand? Thanks!!!!

    This could happen if there were insertions (-, gaps) in the subject?
