Research Associate in Bioinformatics

Salary: £27,578 - £35,938 pa
Dr Hibberd's laboratory is at the forefront of research into the evolution of C4 photosynthesis, and is also involved in major international efforts to break the yield barrier in staple crops such as rice. The group is generating a wealth of data using high throughput sequencing, as well as genetic and cell biology approaches. There is a particular interest in developing methods for the analysis of large databases derived from RNAseq from model plants with genome sequences, but also for species that have not yet had their genomes sequenced. Work will include analysis of genome structure, rates of recombination, allelic imbalance, and QTL analysis in new populations of rice that are generated during the lifetime of the project by collaborators at the International Rice Research Institute.
Within the laboratory, both wet lab and computational analysis occur in parallel. We are seeking a talented individual with quantitative and computational skills to make advances in biology, and inform crop improvement. Skills in one or more of the following areas would be an advantage: computer programming (R, Perl), statistics, computational biology, bioinformatics. A real interest in biology is essential. The postholder will work closely with experimentalists in the group, and be embedded with the informatics group led by Dr Krys Kelly and Professor David Baulcombe.
You should have a higher degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline, with strong quantitative and/or programming skills and a good knowledge of biology
