  • 2019 SIB Bioinformatics Awards

2019 SIB Bioinformatics Awards - Call now open!

To promote excellence and innovation in the field of bioinformatics, the SIB Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics created the SIB Bioinformatics Awards ten years ago to acknowledge early career bioinformaticians and ground-breaking resources of national and international standing.

SIB Awards honour bioinformatics excellence in three categories:
    • SIB Early Career Bioinformatics Award – an international award to recognise the excellence and promising nature of a researcher’s early career, based on one or several projects and/or papers focussing on the in silico analysis of biological sequences, structures or processes. More information
      Call for entries: 10 January – 31 March 2019
    • SIB Best Swiss Bioinformatics Graduate Paper Award – a national award that recognises outstanding papers published by a graduate student in the area of in silico analysis of biological sequences, structures or processes. More information
      Call for entries: 10 January – 31 March 2019
    • SIB Bioinformatics Resource Innovation Award – an international award that recognises newly developed bioinformatics resources with an important impact on life science research or the clear potential to make such an impact. More information
      Call for entries: 4 February – 30 April 2019

Applications will be reviewed by a jury of international experts, with the winners to be announced during the awards ceremony of the 14th [BC]2 Basel Computational Biology Conference (part of the Basel Life Congress, 9-12 September 2019, Switzerland). All Awards carry a cash prize and laureates will be invited to give a plenary talk during the [BC]2 conference.

Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
    by seqadmin

The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist on Modified Bases...

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...
