    Senior Research Staff Scientist - R&D Innovations Group

    The Human Genome Sequencing Center (HGSC) at Baylor College of Medicine is looking for a highly motivated individual to perform complex and advanced research work requiring high-level skills and expertise. This position is expected to independently initiate and advance new ideas and may be required to supervise others in planning and completing these research and development projects.

    The HGSC was founded in 1996 under the leadership of Dr. Richard Gibbs and is a world leader in genomics. The fundamental interests of the HGSC are in advancing biology and genetics by improved genome technologies. As one of the three large-scale sequencing centers funded by the National Institutes of Health, the HGSC provides a unique opportunity to work on the cutting edge of genomic science in a state of the art institution.

    Experimentation will focus on NexGen Platform advancement including novel library and capture techniques, as well as development of molecular assays for application in biological questions particularly in the areas of cancer and mendelian genomics as well as clinical applications. Efforts will be applicable to all major NexGen platforms including Illumina (HiSeq and MiSeq), SOLiD, Ion Torrent and PacBio instrumentation.

    Job Duties:
    *Plans, directs and conducts research experiments.
    *Evaluates and analyzes data.
    *Develops research techniques and performs applications required for specific research projects.
    *Conducts literature searches and summarizes information in appropriate format.
    *Effectively documents results of experiments for reporting to upper level management.
    *Participates in grant and publication preparation.
    *May supervise, schedule and coordinate the activities of less experienced research staff.

    Minimum Education Ph.D. in molecular biology

    Minimum Job Experience Two years of related experience in NexGen sequencing.

    Applicants should have significant experience in general molecular biology techniques including PCR applications, RtPCR, library construction, DNA Sequencing and DNA Sequencing instrumentation. Experience in microarray technology, bead separation technologies and automation is preferred. Data analysis and bioinformatics skills are also preferred. Trouble shooting and problem solving skills will also be required as well as the ability to analyze, organize communicate and present data effectively. Candidates should be able to work well in a team environment. This position requires good verbal and written communication skills.
