  • Software Engineer - Front End - cBioPortal for Cancer Genomics

Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center is a world renowned organization dedicated to the progressive control and cure of cancer through programs of patient care, research, and education.

The mission of the Center for Molecular Oncology (CMO) is to promote precision oncology through genomic analysis to guide the diagnosis and treatment of cancer patients. The CMO brings together clinicians and scientists throughout MSKCC to conduct large-scale translational research involving molecular characterization of patient tumor specimens in order to identify correlations between genomic features and clinical outcomes.

We are looking for a Front End Software Engineer to support the cBioPortal for Cancer Genomics at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (http://cbioportal.org). The cBioPortal is a highly successful tool that supports the CMO as well as thousands of cancer researchers and clinicians around the globe. To take the Portal to the next level and to transition it towards use in the clinic, we are looking to expand its analysis and visualization options.

As one of the core engineers on the team, you will be architecting the next generation of cBioPortal towards rich client web applications with more interactive analysis and visualization features. You will be designing new interactive features, taking them quickly from prototype to production. You’ll need to understand front-end web architecture, web UI design, and web-based visualization, and adopt cutting edge web technologies.

    Responsibilities:
    • Work closely with our existing team including researchers, back-end engineers, and other front-end engineers to implement and redesign web UI for analysis and visualization of cancer genomics and clinical data
    • Build next-generation web applications with a focus on the client side
    • Explore and evaluate client side frameworks and technologies
    • Design and build UI architecture and components
    • Quickly generate a prototype from UI concepts for testing and team feedback
    • Pick up Java as necessary and engage with back-end systems

    Minimum Qualifications:
    • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field and 2+ years of software development experience, or a master’s degree
    • Web application development experience
    • Experience with JQuery, AJAX, HTML, and CSS
    • Programming experience in Java or C/C++
    • Experience developing in teams
    • Self-motivated, responsible and goal-oriented
    • Interest in contributing to biological research with clinical applications

    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Experience with front-end framework such as Angular, Backbone, or Amber
    • Experience designing modular object-oriented JavaScript
    • Experience with HTML5, CSS3, and Javascript visualization libraries such as D3.js
    • Experience with server-side web frameworks such as Java/Spring/Hibernate, Python/Django, Ruby/Rails etc
    • User interface design knowledge
    • Strong ability to learn new tools, technologies and languages as needed
    • Prior involvement or interest in bioinformatics or cancer genomics domain

MSKCC offers an excellent salary and comprehensive benefits. MSKCC is an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer committed to diversity and inclusion in all aspects of recruiting and employment. All qualified individuals are encouraged to apply.

Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
    by seqadmin

The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist...

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...
