Massey University, Auckland, New Zealand - PhD Scholarship in Quantitative Biology

We are looking to hire a student with interests in microbiology, evolution, and genomics to work on the evolution of behaviour and memory in natural populations of E. coli. The project will involve characterising the behaviour of bacteria using a range of cutting-edge techniques, including:
    - microfluidics ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UVT-zxDj8wQ )

    - automated image analysis

    - long read nanopore sequencing and analysis of epigenetic modifications

    - high-throughput flow cytometry.

The precise research direction of the project will depend on where the student's passions lie. Applicants with a background in molecular biology and microbial genetics are especially encouraged to apply. Previous experience in R / Python is also highly desirable.

Each three year scholarship covers all university fees and includes an annual tax-exempt stipend of $27,500 NZD .

The Silander Lab is in the Institute of Natural and Mathematical Sciences at Massey University, Auckland. We are interested in microbial evolution, with a focus on the evolution of transcriptional regulation and other quantitative phenotypes, especially at the single-cell level.

The Institute of Natural and Mathematical Sciences has a young and dynamic faculty with a broad range of research interests, from statistics to ecology to evolution. Massey University is located on the North Shore of Auckland, a city which is regularly ranked among the most liveable cities in the world.

To apply, please send a cover letter and CV, including the names of two references, as a single pdf to Dr. Olin Silander ([email protected]). See https://osilander.wordpress.com for more information on the lab. Application deadline is Feb 10 2018. Start date upon mutual agreement, preferably by mid-2018.

    Strategies for Sequencing Challenging Samples
    by seqadmin

Despite advancements in sequencing platforms and related sample preparation technologies, certain sample types continue to present significant challenges that can compromise sequencing results. Pedro Echave, Senior Manager of the Global Business Segment at Revvity, explained that the success of a sequencing experiment ultimately depends on the amount and integrity of the nucleic acid template (RNA or DNA) obtained from a sample. “The better the quality of the nucleic acid isolated...
