  • Senior Bioinformatics Developer/ Contractor

    POSITION SUMMARY

    We are looking for an experienced biomedical informatics developer to join a dynamic project team developing the next generation of drug target identification and development tools for biomedical researchers.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    Essential Functions:
    • Develop software for integration of heterogeous biological data types using semantic web as well as traditional bioinformatics techniques
    • Implement hypothesis identification, comparison, and scoring analytics for knowledge-based computational systems biology system that enables biomedical researchers to make effective drug target selection decisions
    • Performance tuning and optimization of algorithms and bioinformatics data processing pipelines
    • Participate in the design and implementation of data sources used by analytics

    Marginal Functions:
    • Extend and integrate computable disease models used by analytics

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

    • Strong applied math skills in graph theory and statistics, ability to reason using summary statistics
    • Understanding of target identification approaches for drug discovery
    • Demonstrated ability to develop innovative ideas and execute effectively against them in a highly collaborative environment
    • Familiarity with biomedical ontologies (e.g. GO, UMLS), biomedical data exchange formats (e.g. SBML, BioPax), and biomedical databases (e.g. MEDLINE)
    • Working understanding of molecular and cellular biology concepts, and eagerness to help advance biomedical discovery
    • Knowledge of scientific computing workflows, including analytics, visualization and pipeline workflow for data processing
    • Ability to work effectively in an agile, release-early release-often development environment
    • Ability to select among existing methodologies and tools, and where necessary develop new approaches, to drive design processes and communicate design rationales
    • Exceptional analytic thinking and demonstrated ability to independently analyze large-scale datasets
    • Expert Excel skills and ability to use basic statistical packages (e.g. R)
    • Strong visual, verbal, and written communication skills

    EXPERIENCE

    Minimum
    • Experience using biomedical ontologies (MeSH, UMLS, GO, etc), controlled vocabularies, or semantic datasets (RDFS, OWL, etc)
    • Experience developing scientific analytics or pipelines used in drug discovery workflows

    Preferred
    • Experience developing in an agile team-based environment, including knowledge of SVN, continuous integration, etc.
    • Experience developing web-based front-ends for scientific computing resources, with an understanding of modern web frameworks
    • 3+ years experience programming Java

    EDUCATION

    Minimum
    • 5+ years bioinformatics experience with a MS or higher degree in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, or related field
    Preferred
    • 7+ years industry experience with a PhD in Biomedical Informatics
