  • Bioinformatics Postdoctoral Position in Computational Cancer Epigenetics

    Description:
The laboratory of Professor X. Shirley Liu (http://liulab.dfci.harvard.edu/, Center for Functional Cancer Epigenetics, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Harvard School of Public Health) invites applications for a postdoctoral position in Bioinformatics.

The research in the laboratory focuses on designing bioinformatics algorithms (Liu et al, Nat Biotech 2002; Zhang et al, Genome Biol 2008) and designing integrative genomics approaches (He et al, Nat Genet 2010) to understand transcriptional and epigenetic regulation in development and diseases (Carroll et al, 2006; Oszolak et al, Nat Biotech 2007; Lupien et al, Cell 2008; Wang et al, Cell 2009; Vastenhouw et al, Nat 2010; Feng et al, Science 2011; Xu et al, Science 2012).

A representative list of current projects includes: design a fast algorithm to search all public ChIP/DNase-seq for relevant data and regulatory logic; integrate ChIP/DNase-seq data to mine The Cancer Genome Atlas data; use chromatin dynamics to understand cell differentiation and cancer drug targets; predict cancer drug sensitivity and synthetic lethal pathways in cancer cells; model the genetic and epigenetic mechanisms underlying cancer drug resistance; identify and characterize cancer-related lncRNAs.

The Liu Lab has trained 2 PhDs and 16 postdoctoral fellows (6 current) in the last decade, with 8 of them gone on to tenure track faculty positions.

    Requirement:
    Ideal applicant should have:
    A. a PhD degree in related field (physical sciences or biology)
    B. strong programming skills: ((Python | C | C++ | Java) & R)
    C. strong quantitative background (machine learning, Bayesian inference, etc.) or computational genomics experiences (high throughput sequence analysis, etc.)
    D. at least two first author papers (or three if co-first authors) written in English in previous area of research (not necessarily computational biology) with submitted, accepted or published status in journals or conference proceedings
    E. good spoken and written communication skills
In addition, applicant must be able to visit Boston for interviews without visa application.

    How to apply:
Interested applicants should submit a letter of interest with a one-page proposal for a project to be conducted in the Liu Lab, CV, and three references (including name and contact information) to xsliu (At) jimmy (Dot) harvard (Dot) edu with subject line “Postdoctoral application”.

Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
    by seqadmin

The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist...

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...
