  • postdoctora fellowship in computational biology and systems medicine, uni of oslo

    Job description
The Computational Biology and Systems Medicine group (Kuijjer group) at the Centre for Molecular Medicine Norway (NCMM, https://www.med.uio.no/ncmm/english/), a Nordic EMBL partner, and the University of Oslo is looking for a postdoctoral fellow. The position is available immediately. The appointment will be for three years. The application deadline for this position is November 30, 2018.

The Computational Biology and Systems Medicine group investigates how gene regulatory networks are disrupted in cancer. We do this by building computational tools that model networks of gene regulation, which represent for example how transcription factors or microRNAs regulate genome-wide gene expression. Using high-performance computing, we can model these networks for each individual sample in large-scale cancer `omics datasets. We then analyze these “big data” networks using statistical methods. This allows us to better understand both the system-wide level of changes, as well as specific disruptions in regulation that may drive cancer development, progression, and response to treatment.

    More about the position
We have two projects available. The first project focuses on the computational aspect of our research. This project aims to develop tools to correctly model gene regulation and to build gene regulatory networks. The candidate will both expand current tools (see https://www.kuijjerlab.org/tools/) and will develop new tools for network inference of different types of transcriptional and post-transcriptional gene regulation. The candidate will thoroughly test these methods on various human `omics datasets.

The second project will largely focus on the bioinformatic/analytic aspect of our research. The aim will be to drive new discoveries in cancer research by big data modeling of gene regulation in individual cancer samples. The outcome of this project will be to identify new gene regulatory biomarkers and specific candidates for personalized treatment. We will do this for individual cancer types (we have a specific interest in sarcomas), as well as on studying pan-cancer gene regulation.

The main purpose of the fellowship is to qualify researchers for work in higher academic positions within their disciplines.

As a postdoctoral researcher you will be working under the direct supervision of Dr. Marieke Kuijjer (see kuijjerlab.org). There will be opportunities to start collaborations with other research groups at UiO and institutes abroad (we currently collaborate with groups at Harvard Chan School of Public Health and Leiden University Medical Center).

    Qualification requirements
    • PhD in computational biology, bioinformatics, cancer genomics, biophysics, computer science, statistics, or a related field. We are an interdisciplinary team and welcome postdocs who want to expand their knowledge in either biology or computation. Doctoral dissertation must be submitted for evaluation by the closing date. Appointment is dependent on the public defence of the doctoral thesis being approved.
    • Proficient in programming and/or scripting languages, such as R, Python, Matlab.
    • Good analytical skills.
    • Knowledge of statistics.
    • Documented ability to write scientific manuscripts.
    • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English.
    • Excellent communication skills.
    • Ability to work in a team environment.

The following qualifications will count in the assessment of the applicants:
    • Previous experience with genomic data
    • Experience with high-performance computing.

    We offer
    • salary NOK 497 000 -- 576 100 per annum depending on qualifications in position as Postdoctoral Research Fellow (position code 1352)
    • a professionally stimulating working environment
    • attractive welfare benefits and a generous pension agreement, in addition to Oslo’s family-friendly environment with its rich opportunities for culture and outdoor activities

    How to apply
    The application must include:
    • cover letter (statement of motivation, summarizing scientific work and research interest. Please also state which of the two above mentioned projects you would prefer.)
    • CV (summarizing education, positions, pedagogical experience, administrative experience and other qualifying activity)
    • copies of educational certificates (academic transcripts only)
    • a complete list of publications
    • list of reference persons: 2-3 references (name, relation to candidate, e-mail and phone number)

The application with attachments must be delivered in our electronic recruiting system: https://www.jobbnorge.no/en/availabl...stems-medicine. Please note that all documents should be in English.

In assessing the applications, special emphasis will be placed on the documented, academic qualifications, as well as the candidates motivation and personal suitability. Interviews with the best qualified candidates will be arranged.

    Formal regulations
Please see the guidelines and regulations for appointments to Postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Oslo. No one can be appointed as Postdoctoral Fellow for more than one specified period at the same institution. According to the Norwegian Freedom and Information Act (Offentleglova) information about the applicant may be included in the public applicant list, also in cases where the applicant has requested non-disclosure. The University of Oslo has an agreement for all employees, aiming to secure rights to research results etc. The University of Oslo aims to achieve a balanced gender composition in the workforce and to recruit people with ethnic minority backgrounds.

    Contact information
Please contact Dr. Marieke Kuijjer, email address: marieke.kuijjer at ncmm.uio.no with questions on the project and position. For questions relating to the administrative aspects of the application, please contact Ragni Indahl ragni.indahl at ncmm.uio.no

Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
    by seqadmin

The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist...

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...
