  • Bioinformatics post-doc - Cambridge, UK

Scientific Programmer PDRA in Bioinformatics (18 month fixed term contract)
    Closing date: 04/08/2017

NIAB provides an exceptional research environment in which to undertake basic and strategic research on crops. A new position is available within the Genetics and Breeding Department at NIAB, Cambridge contributing towards a natural variation platform for pest-resistant cassava breeding. Your duties will involve genome assembly using long and short read data, variant calling, and genome annotation for 100 accessions of cassava wild relatives from CIAT's global cassava collection. You will also prepare data for submission to public repositories and present the data in a genome browser.

You will have a PhD in a relevant field of computer or biological sciences and bioinformatics experience analysing high-throughput sequencing data. You will also be proficient in a scripting language such as Python or Perl. You will ideally have experience with running variant calling, assembly and annotation pipelines. You will also have excellent organisation and communication and problem solving skills.

Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
    by seqadmin

The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist...

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...
