  • SMC DREAM Challenge Webinar: Learn To Build Your Challenge Models In The Cloud

    Dear SMC DREAM Challenge Participants,

Please click on the green link below to reserve a seat for the May 5 (9am Pacific) SMC Challenge webinar where Challenge organizers will cover how to make best use of the Google cloud computing tools during the Challenge.

Please register for SMC DREAM Challenge Webinar: Learn To Build Your Challenge Models In The Cloud on May 5, 2014 9:00 AM PDT at:
    https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/reg...49289992379138
After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar.

A little background to set the stage for the May 5 webinar:
Increasingly vast cancer genomic datasets are becoming available, and leveraging cloud-computing is an attractive option for processing them. As an example, participants in the ICGC-TCGA DREAM Somatic Mutation Calling Challenge are eligible for free credits for the Google Cloud Platform. These credits can be used for extra compute capacity or to experiment with algorithm implementation and execution. If you are interested to take advantage of these credits but are not sure how to begin, or if you simply want to learn more about cloud-computing with genomic data or the Challenge itself please join us for this webinar.

    Topics will include:
-- Introduction to using the cloud
-- How to work with challenge data in Google Cloud Platform
-- Leveraging cloud technologies for your challenge submissions: demos of ways to code, compute, and view data
    -- Challenge Q & A

    Presenters:
    Paul Boutros (University of Toronto)
    Chris Bare (Sage Bionetworks)
    Kristen Dang (Sage Bionetworks)

We will also be joined by Nicole Deflaux, Software Engineer, and Jonathan Bingham, Product Manager, Google Cloud Platform who will be available to answer questions during the webinar.

    Sincerely,
    The SMC Challenge Organizers

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...

    Strategies for Sequencing Challenging Samples
    by seqadmin

Despite advancements in sequencing platforms and related sample preparation technologies, certain sample types continue to present significant challenges that can compromise sequencing results. Pedro Echave, Senior Manager of the Global Business Segment at Revvity, explained that the success of a sequencing experiment ultimately depends on the amount and integrity of the nucleic acid template (RNA or DNA) obtained from a sample. “The better the quality of the nucleic acid isolated...
