  • Postdoc position in Steven Salzberg's group at U. Maryland

I am looking for 1-2 post-doctoral scientists with strong bioinformatics skills to participate in research in one or more of the following areas:
o transcriptome analysis using RNA-Seq data from next-generation sequencing experiments
o computational gene finding, with particular emphasis on eukaryotic genomes
o genome assembly tools and algorithms that address the requirements of novel DNA sequencing technologies
o human microbiome studies, focusing on methods for analysis of large-scale sequencing studies of metagenomic samples.

A Ph.D. in Computer Science, bioinformatics, or closely related discipline such as applied mathematics or biostatistics is preferred. Applicants with Ph.D. training in genomics or related fields and with strong programming skills will also be considered. For more information send your CV and a statement of your interest in a position in Steven Salzberg's research group to [email protected]; make sure to mention your interest in this postdoctoral position.

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...

    Strategies for Sequencing Challenging Samples
    by seqadmin

Despite advancements in sequencing platforms and related sample preparation technologies, certain sample types continue to present significant challenges that can compromise sequencing results. Pedro Echave, Senior Manager of the Global Business Segment at Revvity, explained that the success of a sequencing experiment ultimately depends on the amount and integrity of the nucleic acid template (RNA or DNA) obtained from a sample. “The better the quality of the nucleic acid isolated...
