    Post-Doctoral Researcher
    Ecology and Evolutionary Biology
    University of Kansas, Lawrence

    Overview
The Walters Lab in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Kansas is seeking a Post-Doctoral Researcher to join an NSF-funded project developing an R/Bioconductor package focused on applying linear mixed models to RNA-seq data, with a primary aim of analyzing of sex chromosome dosage compensation. This project is in collaboration with biostatistician Thomas Hardcastle (Cambridge University, UK), and further details can be found here: https://walterslab.github.io/doseR/

    Description and Qualifications
The primary responsibilities of this position are the development, testing, and documentation of this nascent Bioconductor package. Substantial opportunity is also expected for pursuing additional/independent research projects concerning genome biology and tailored to suit the interests and skills of the successful applicant. Ideally such projects will overlap focal research areas in the Walters lab, including functional/comparative/population genomics, sex chromosome evolution, sexual selection, and reproductive biology.

The ideal candidate will have expertise in R programming and package development, extensive experience with bioinformatics and functional genomics, strong statistical and quantitative skills, a clear record of independent research leading to quality publications, and excellent communication skills.

    Timing and Salary
Initial review of applications will begin April 23, 2018 and continue as long as needed to identify a qualified pool. The anticipated start date is June 18, 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter. The initial appointment is for one year, with the possibility of renewal for an additional year. Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...

    Strategies for Sequencing Challenging Samples
    by seqadmin

Despite advancements in sequencing platforms and related sample preparation technologies, certain sample types continue to present significant challenges that can compromise sequencing results. Pedro Echave, Senior Manager of the Global Business Segment at Revvity, explained that the success of a sequencing experiment ultimately depends on the amount and integrity of the nucleic acid template (RNA or DNA) obtained from a sample. “The better the quality of the nucleic acid isolated...
