  • PacBio cuts 28% work force

Have they gone the way of Helicos?

  • #2
Too early to say. They could be just re-positioning the emphasis of their workforce. But paring down the work force of a supposedly growing company is rarely a good sign. Glad I didn't apply for any of those numerous PacBio posts in the "Industry Jobs" section. :-)

Many are supposed to be in the "R&D" section, which is probably not good news either.

They did go on a gangbuster hiring spree prior to their IPO, and are probably discovering that the revenue cannot support the workforce expansion. With their main strength relative to the competition being long segment reads, it is a valid question to ask whether there is a sustainable commercial position there. After all, how much denovo sequencing is needed on a large scale? On the surface GNOM would appear to be targeting a more sustainable commercial target. Thoughts?

          Strategies for Sequencing Challenging Samples
          by seqadmin

Despite advancements in sequencing platforms and related sample preparation technologies, certain sample types continue to present significant challenges that can compromise sequencing results. Pedro Echave, Senior Manager of the Global Business Segment at Revvity, explained that the success of a sequencing experiment ultimately depends on the amount and integrity of the nucleic acid template (RNA or DNA) obtained from a sample. “The better the quality of the nucleic acid isolated...
