QR Codes and Plate Maps

First Post! Sorry if this is not quite the appropriate forum, but it seems like something an bioinformatician would know best.

I've seen QR codes around quite a bit now, and I understand they are able to hold incredible amounts of data for their small size. Could we potentially store a whole plate map, say well number A01-H12 and 7 character sample name? Could we use these with Excel? What would be the best tool for generating them? It would be a great backup system for misplaced plates.

Yes. QR codes can hold several characters of information. I recommend you visit: http://qrcode.kaywa.com/ where you can make codes of different size. The bigger the image the more data you can encode.
