CLC Genomics Machine -- anyone willing to share experiences

Hi,

Are there any CLC Genomics Machine users will to share there experiences?

Everyone loves benchmarks but i guess i am more interested in how does the system work in shared environment with multiple users?

is it easy for local IT to manage/upgrade?

also has anyone installed CLC server on a similar spec third party machine?

We do use CLC science server on standard hardware (Dell). It is fairly simple to install/upgrade (tech support is there if you need help) for a regular sys admin. Though we have not done it as yet I believe LDAP auth has been integrated in the latest version.

You will want to closely check the licensing model though and make sure it works for you. Smallest science server config gets you one "head" node and one worker node (you would need 2 servers/blades). Only a single job runs on a worker node at any given time (so any additional jobs would pend). CLCBio obviously wants you to invest in additional worker node licenses (and you could if your budget allows for it) if you are anticipating a large number of users/jobs.

You also need a fully licensed desktop client (CLC Genomics Workbench) to submit jobs/retrieve results. There is no workbench light/viewer to facilitate job management.

Hi,

CLC Genomics Server is a software solution. The CLC Genomics machine is a turn-key solution using standard hardware and software (OS etc). The Genomics Server software runs on almost any x86 architecture running Linux, Windows or Mac OS X.

LDAP has been part of the Server system, since it was launched. If you do not have LDAP or Microsoft Active Directory, you can also use a built in user/group directory.

Btw., there is a web-interface for process management (and other administration features), where you can monitor and stop/restart jobs.
