Bioinformatics Analyst - University of Washington

This position is funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). The duration of this position is contingent upon continued funding.

The Department of Genome Sciences is comprised of 25 labs addressing leading edge questions in biology and medicine by developing and applying genetic, genomic and computational approaches taking advantage of genomic information now available for a host of species. The Department of Genome Sciences expects to make major contributions in the application of genome science to understand the fundamentals of biology and to improve human health and well-being.

The Shendure Lab in the Department of Genome Sciences at the University of Washington has an outstanding opportunity for a Bioinformatics Analyst. The successful candidate will be involved in the analysis of high-throughput DNA sequencing data in a laboratory that is focused on developing new genomics technologies. Main projects include the analysis of bacterial genomes for the evolution of antibiotic resistance and the analysis of human resequencing data for the identification of disease-related variants.

    Responsibilities:

    * Processing, analysis, and distribution of next-generation DNA sequencing data

    * Running well-developed pipelines for next-generation DNA sequence mapping and variant analysis

    * Development and optimization of scripts and algorithms to improve on current practice.

    * Management of compute space & common bioinformatics tools

    Requirements:
*Applicants must have a Bachelors or Masters degree in bioinformatics, computer science, statistics, engineering or a related field.

*Strong development skills in an object-oriented language (Java /
C++), and familiarity with scripting languages (Perl/Python). A strong
background in statistical analysis methods. Previous experience working with large data sets is preferred.

*Proven ability to work in a collaborative, fast-paced environment with good communication and teamwork skills.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except where there are legal requirements such as license/certification/registration.

Advanced Sequencing Platforms Tackle Neuroscience’s Toughest Genomics Problems
      by SEQadmin2

Genomics studies in neuroscience face a special challenge due to the brain’s complexity and scarcity of samples. Mapping changes in cell type and state using conventional next-generation sequencing methods remains challenging. Advances in technologies like single-cell sequencing, spatial transcriptomics, and long-read sequencing have opened the door to deeper studies of the brain and diseases like Alzheimer’s, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and schizophrenia.

Cancer Drug Resistance: The Lingering Barrier to Rising Survival
      by SEQadmin2

Cancer survival rates have significantly increased in the last few decades in the United States, reaching a combined 70% 5-year survival rate by 2021. Behind this number, there are years of research to find new therapies, drug targets, and early detection methods. But there is one core challenge that keeps slowing down these advances, and it’s about drug resistance.

There is no single reason why many patients don’t respond to treatment as expected. Cancer is...

Reply to Nine Things a Sample Prep Scientist Thinks About Before Sequencing

Love this - good data definitely starts from good input, and poor input can only give relatively poor data. I particularly like the mention of Nanodrop/absorbance based methods for quantification. It's such a toss up if you'll get an accurate reading or what amounts to a randomly generated number, and a lot of library/sequencing related issues can be traced back to poor quant.
