help! what is a paired-end read?

I am a newer in this area.
Could anybody tell me what is a paired-end read?

someone told me that a paired-end read is a read with the two 3' end sequences were sequenced.

for example: a fragment of DNA strands like this

    3' 5'
    ATTTGCXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXATTCGG
    5' 3'

and this is used in an assembly process when sequencing.

I am confused by his answer.
Is his answer right? if not, please give me a right answer!
    Thank you N*very much!
