A career path in bioinformatics at VCCRI – multiple positions in Sydney, Australia

The Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute (VCCRI), established in 1994, is recognised as an international centre of excellence in biomedical research, with a focus on heart disease and cardiovascular biology.

Applications are invited from those with a strong interest in bioinformatics and statistical genetics to join our rapidly expanding bioinformatics research program at the VCCRI, led by Dr Joshua Ho and Dr Eleni Giannoulatou. More details about our research activities can be found on our website http://bioinformatics.victorchang.edu.au/. We seek to fill the following positions:

Postdoctoral Research Fellow (1-2 positions): PhD/DPhil/MD in the fields of computational biology, bioinformatics, statistical genetics, or a relevant quantitative field with a demonstrated aptitude for bioinformatics research. Strong candidates with relevant previous postdoctoral experience may be considered for a senior postdoctoral position.

Bioinformatician (1-2 positions): Bachelor’s degree in bioinformatics, computer science, statistics, science, engineering or a relevant quantitative field.

PhD students (Multiple): Bachelor’s degree with honours in bioinformatics, computer science, statistics, science, engineering or a relevant quantitative field. A successful candidate is expected to be competitive for an Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) or a similar scholarship. A successful candidate will be offered a top up scholarship of $6,000 per annum. The top candidate will also be eligible for the competitive VCCRI PhD scholarship which is worth an additional $10,000 per annum.

For all positions, good programming skill in at least one language (e.g., R, Perl, C++ or Java) is essential. Previous experience in analysis of next generation sequencing data is highly desirable. A generous salary and employer contribution to superannuation will be provided to successful applicants commensurate with their qualification and experience.

    HOW TO APPLY
Interested candidates should submit their curriculum vitae to HR Manager Maria Voukenas
    at [email protected]

    CLOSING DATE
Applications will be accepted until all positions are filled. All interested candidates are encouraged to submit an application before 30th October 2015.

Nine Things a Sample Prep Scientist Thinks About Before Sequencing
    by SEQadmin2

I’m not a sequencing expert. I’m a purification scientist who uses NGS to evaluate workflows my group develops. With this perspective, we think about the sample first and the NGS workflow second. The sequencer is an exceptionally honest reporter, but it can only report on what you give it, so whether you get clean, interpretable data from an NGS workflow is largely determined before you begin.

Here are nine questions we think about, in roughly the order they matter, before...

From Collection to Sequencing: Why Sample Preparation and Preservation Define Sequencing Data
    by SEQadmin2

Data variability is still an issue in sequencing technologies despite the advances in reproducibility and accuracy of these platforms. But the problem does not originate in the sequencing itself, but in the previous steps, before the sample reaches the sequencer.

The first step is collection, followed by preservation and sample preparation for analysis. Most scientists overlook those steps, but not being careful might just be skewing the experiment’s results.
