thanks a lot for the advice. I did now change the java environments several times (via aliases to the the latest JREs) and tried to use both the your java6 and java7 versions and I always end up with the same messages as before. Our OS is old (CentOS 5.9) , as is our default java (it is 64-bit nevertheless (build 1.6.0_16-b01)). Thus, it is very possible that our configuration is outdated.
I will try to somehow set java "ulimits".
