  • Storage Requirements

Our company is looking at purchasing an Illumina NGS. They have told our IT department they only need us to provide low cost storage to store the result data.

I know the sequencer comes with a workstation with about 4TB of data, but what I'm trying to figure out what type of storage they will need to store the data and perform analysis. Are there specific performance requirements (IOPS, Aggregate throughput) in order to run analysis of the data?

Is it better to have the instrument write the data directly to the same storage that you would run the analysis from or to seperate it out?

We already have an Isilon cluster however they say the cost is too high for storage so I was looking at alternative solutions but want to make sure we purchase something that will not cause performance issues.

Any feedback from others is greatly appreciated.

There are already some in depth discussions of storage and compute architectures on this forum, I'd have a look through those to see what others have opted for.

We're installing storage with a wedge of 15k drives for analysis with hopefully sufficient IO and a larger group of cheaper 2TB SATA drives for archiving. Data from the sequencer should in my opinion be directly to the machine provided by the supplier, and cleaned up after every run.

Keep in mind a dedicated network is important.
