  • Bioinformatician for the analysis of NGS data - Helsinki, Finland

The Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland (FIMM) has state-of-the-art Illumina DNA sequencers and is a primary site for cutting-edge ”next-gen” sequencing in Finland. For example, FIMM has sequenced over 200 human exomes. We are looking for a bioinformatician to further develop analysis and data mining capabilities for exciting projects utilising high throughput sequencing. Many of the collaborative projects aim at identifying disease-causing genetic changes, with some directly aiming at helping physicians to more accurately diagnose and better treat the disease of a patient. The post offers ample opportunities to collaborate with different research groups as well as possibilities to advance research career, such as authorship in publications. FIMM has altogether over 25 bioinformaticians and IT professionals, providing critical mass, significant expertise and support as well as an extensive international collaboration network.

    Qualification and experience
    • University degree, preferrably PhD (or DTech) and/or practical experience in bioinformatics in the academia and industry is valued
    • Experience in analyzing “next-gen” sequence data and knowledge of relevant tools is appreciated
    • Experience in gene expression analysis and knowledge of relevant tools, particularly the Bioconductor framework
    • Proficiency in Perl or Python and and working knowledge of R
    • Knowledge of Unix or Linux environment and shell scripting
    • Fluency in English and good inter-personal skills

    Terms
The salary is in the range of €36-54k per annum depending on the qualification and experience. The contract offered will be until the end of 2013 but is extendable depending on the funding available at the time.

    How to apply
    Please apply on-line at http://www.fimm.fi/en/open_positions...informatician/.

    Choosing Between NGS and qPCR
    by seqadmin

Next-generation sequencing (NGS) and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) are essential techniques for investigating the genome, transcriptome, and epigenome. In many cases, choosing the appropriate technique is straightforward, but in others, it can be more challenging to determine the most effective option. A simple distinction is that smaller, more focused projects are typically better suited for qPCR, while larger, more complex datasets benefit from NGS. However,...

    Non-Coding RNA Research and Technologies
    by seqadmin

Non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) do not code for proteins but play important roles in numerous cellular processes including gene silencing, developmental pathways, and more. There are numerous types including microRNA (miRNA), long ncRNA (lncRNA), circular RNA (circRNA), and more. In this article, we discuss innovative ncRNA research and explore recent technological advancements that improve the study of ncRNAs.
