The Greengard laboratory (Rockefeller University, New York, USA) is accepting applications from outstanding individuals for a 2-3 year postdoctoral research fellowship in the field of bio-informatics and/or applied mathematics. The position is available immediately.
The candidate should have a PhD in the field of bio-informatics or applied mathematics, ideally with some experience in biology related questions. The candidate should already be familiar with gene expression data analysis, preferably with RNA-seq data analysis. Proficiency in Linux scripting, in a major programming language and in handling large datasets are a must.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with a team of biologists (molecular biologists, biochemists and behavior specialists) as well as to pursue unique research in the fields of system biology, neurodegeneration (e.g. Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease) and other brain related disorders such as major depression. This position requires a highly self-motivated individual with excellent oral communication skills and great interpersonal skills. Rockefeller University has a long history of outstanding scientific research. The Greengard laboratory is renowned for its work on neuronal signaling, both in normal and pathological conditions including various disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and major depression. Recently, the laboratory, in collaboration with Dr. Heintz (Rockefeller University, New York, USA), developed a novel powerful technology called bacTRAP (Heiman et al., Cell, 2008, Doyle et al., Cell, 2008), aimed at isolating translated mRNAs from specific neuronal populations across the brain. This technology, coupled to RNA-sequencing, yields an extremely detailed and unprecedented insight into these intricate neuronal populations, otherwise inaccessible.
Project:
Our laboratory is now applying this technology to study various disorders and neurodegenerative diseases. The goal, for Alzheimer’s Disease for example, is the characterization of degenerating cells in mouse models. Gene expression data for neurons susceptible to degeneration, in young adult mice, in aged mice, and in the context of different perturbations are being generated. In order to translate these highly extensive datasets into knowledge, the candidate will apply the latest existing analysis tools from the RNA-seq field, and will be encouraged to search and/or develop new ones. The candidate will search for the molecular factors/pathways most associated with pathological conditions, in close collaboration with the other scientists involved. The candidate will also have the possibility to design her/his own project aimed at understanding the structure of all the studied translatomes, by studying the joint datasets generated for the various individual projects. Because of the novelty of the bacTRAP technology, there is a high potential for new therapeutic target discovery for Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, major depression and for more fundamental discoveries as well. Because the candidate will be integrated into a team of skilled neurobiologists, biochemists and molecular biologists, her/his project will not be of an abstract modeling nature. He will be constantly in touch with the actual biology of the brain. In silico findings will be verified in functional experiments that the lab has proven great expertise for, over the years, thus making this bio-informatics project a very concrete rewarding one.
