Job description
We are looking for a Bioinformatics Research Assistant.
The bioinformatics assistant will join a small team that supports EU framework 7 projects in which the development of new biobased production systems is a central theme. In these projects we focus on genome reconstruction, annotation, comparative genomics and transcriptome analysis. Of specific interest is the identification and characterization of micro-algal genes that underly the biosynthesis of large chain hydrocarbons and lipids which can be used for the production of biofuels and green chemicals.
Requirements
The position requires a researcher with expertise in and/or interest for applied bioinformatics, holding at least a Bachelor degree in Bioinformatics (HBO). We aim for an enthusiastic collaborator, who is strong in communication with wet-lab biologists and has a project-oriented attitude directed towards solutions.
• Knowledge of and demonstrable experience in a UNIX environment
• Good programming and databasing skills (SQL, Python or Perl) and some knowledge of applied statistics (R)
• Appropriate knowledge of molecular biology and related ‘omics’ fields
• Keen eye for new technological developments, both in silico and at the bench
• Knowledge of (plant) genomics would be an asset
Conditions of employment
We offer a young, dynamic and driven bioinformatics group, focusing on computational challenges in a range of comparative and functional genomics related topics; a state-of-the art computational infrastructure; close collaboration with laboratory experts in metabolomics, proteomics and DNA sequencing.
The position is available for two year, full time, with a possible extension. Maximum gross salary will be € 3220,00 (scale 8) per month, depending on qualifications and experience.

Sander Peters, senior scientist Applied Bioinformatics department of Bioscience, Plant Research International, +31-317-481123 , [email protected], or dr. Gabino Sanchez-Perez, Cluster leader Applied Bioinformatics, Plant Research International, +31-317-481742, [email protected].

Wageningen UR (University & Research centre)
The cluster Applied Bioinformatics (Bioscience, Plant Research International) participates in 2 EU frame-work 7 projects in which development of biotechnology for microalgal productions systems for the purpose of sustainable production of polymers and energy-rich molecules is a central theme. Its bioinformatics research activities contribute to unravelling and application of plant genomes for the improvement of target species such as Botrycoccus braunii and Phaeodactylum via breeding or biotechnology. Our research attention focuses on genome data (HTP sequencing, assembly and annotation, transcriptomics and functional genomics). Strong interaction with wet-lab researchers is key to the success of the activities.

Delivering a substantial contribution to the quality of life. That's our focus – each and every day. Within our domain, healthy food and living environment, we search for answers to issues affecting society – such as sustainable food production, climate change and alternative energy. Of course, we don’t do this alone. Every day, 6,500 people work on ‘the quality of life’, turning ideas into reality, on a global scale.
Could you be one of these people? We give you the space you need.
