PhD position in translational clinical implementation of metagenomics
A PhD position is available for 3 years in the Research Core Unit Genomics at Hannover Medical School in Hannover, Germany starting in October 2019 (or later). Salary will be according to the domestic TV-L tarif (0.65 E13).
The applicant will be working in the modern Pediatric Research Center. Modern cluster computational infrastructure, MGI-seq, NextSeq, Miseq, Pacbio and MinION sequencers are established at present.
Key aspect of the applicant's work will be the evaluation and analysis of next-generation sequencing data in various research projects conducted on site, including projects from the German Lung Centre and the Lower Saxony Big Data OMICS initiative as well the Cluster of Excellence RESIST.
The main project will be focused on the project “Airway microbial metagenome diagnostics for patient care: From bedside to bench to bedside in two working days”. The student will be in charge of sample collection, innovative logistics, DNA extraction prior to sequencing and quality control and taxonomic classification of reads after sequencing. The student will perform the rapid bioinformatic analysis of single specimens and the joint analysis of samples from large cohorts. The third year of the PhD will include application of machine learning techniques learned from experts at the Leibniz University. Other tasks include a diverse range of sequencing analysis projects from epigenomics to genome and single cell analysis.

- NGS data analysis
- Ability to proactively interact with patients and doctors
- Wet lab sample preparation
Required skills:
- Wet lab experience
- Knowledge of shotgun metagenomics (not 16S) and microbial genetics
- Very good spoken and written English
- Ability to work in an interdisciplinary team
Desired skills:
- Experience with next-generation sequencing analysis
- Linux or programming experience
- Fluent German (optional but helpful)
