An inside look at Pacific Biosciences technologies...

The New York Times has a good article on the current technology in use at Pacific Biosciences in Menlo Park.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/09/bu...gewanted=print

S.M.R.T. sequencing (Single Molecule Real Time) Sounds like 454 on steroids. Instead of a "picotiter plate" and pyrophosphate detection, these guys are using a "zero mode waveguide" and phospho-linked fluors.

All I can think of is that old Simpson's episode...

Amazing stuff! The technology backgrounder is a good document for getting up to speed with SMRT. http://www.pacificbiosciences.com/as...ckgrounder.pdf

A press release to GenomeWeb today reveals that the machine will be available (if one is optimistic) in 2010. http://www.genomeweb.com/issues/news/144976-1.html

Here's a link to their animation explaining the process.

Thanks for the "unbiased" promotion of PacBio.

(Note: It might be a good idea to put a disclaimer when you post that you work for them similar to the press releases from the marketing team of companies anticipating to go public.)

Hey there...I assume you're talking to me. This disclaimer has been there since the day I started at PB, and this thread was posted almost a year before I joined.

Not sure why you keep bringing it up...I've been as open as possible since day one, and if you'd checked the date on this thread before posting what I feel is a pretty snide comment, you'd know that.

As I said the last time you brought this up, if you would like to start a dialog about my day-job employer and how that may or may not affect the unbiased nature of the site...please do so in the Site Feedback forum and I'll answer any question and consider all opinions.

Multiomic Liquid Biopsy: What DNA/RNA Panels Reveal That DNA Alone Can’t
              by SEQadmin2

Tumors contain complex mixtures of cell populations that evolve in response to treatment and host-specific factors. Tissue biopsies provide only static snapshots of a tumor’s state. But what if we could follow that evolution over time using a minimally invasive technique?

Liquid biopsies can detect tumor-derived material circulating in the bloodstream, providing a way to study treatment response, detect emerging resistance, and discover new biomarkers. Circulating

New Genomics Technologies Take Aim at Long-Standing Limits
              by SEQadmin2

Researchers using sequencing and genomics tools often have to make trade-offs. They can choose between speed or scale, short reads or long-range information, or targeted panels or a view of the whole transcriptome. New technologies that have been released this year are built to address those tough choices.

We asked six companies the same four questions to learn about their latest products. The new technologies bring a lot to the table, including rethinking sequencing
